Hey there, my name is Rodney aka Nico. Your best teacher for the month of March.
I may be in the position now to spill to you some of the key ingredients of my techniques and approaches in teaching. I am sure every single person in this room knows that I am a loud teacher and a homework king. But still, I am proud to say that some of students enter both my night class and my listening classes – indeed a blockbuster!
I believe many of you may disagree with my teaching style. However, I have secrets on how I assume my students love my class.
First is Consistency. Be consistent with your rules and regulations in the class. This will help your students to trust you. And at the same time control to the class.
Second, Set the mood. You may ask different questions before you start the class up. You don’t go there and straight do your subject. 3-5 minutes free talking is fine.
Third, Focus to the subject matter. What do I mean when I say focus with the subject matter. If you teach pronunciation, then teach pronunciation. Don’t just go there and teach grammar and discussion. It’s a big no no!
Fourth, be open to questions. This allows you to assess students’ retention, letting them clarify, and at the same time, making your students feel you have a mastery on your subject.
Fifth, be honest. If you do not know the questions or the answers to the questions from your students, then tell them you don’t know. And this is also very important when it comes to your student’s performance please do not tell them they are good when in fact they are not good. You have to praise, of course, the excellent performance of your students.
Lastly, make the class fun. It doesn’t mean when I say make the class fun, you have to do games and what not. No, it doesn’t go that way. Like in my case, what I do is I give funny examples. I let students also make their examples. And then I do action. Well, may be that wouldn’t be very applicable in your case. However in my case, it’s applicable and it fits me a lot that’s why I think students love me.
So far, these are the best techniques in my class. I believe that this is honed by my experience and of course, my deep dedication in this academy.
To finally end throwing words here, please allow me to share to you some tips to be somehow successful with your teaching skills.
First, what do you need? This is very important for you to assess your weaknesses both in professional and personal level. This can actually help you to teach more than what you really can do because you know your weaknesses.
Second, what do your students need? This is very important. Again, because some students complain about their level, the class level and what not. I think that is not a problem. It is up to you as a teacher to actually know the exact level of the student. Do a needs assessment. Maybe the placement test results are not actually very accurate. Or let’s say they cannot actually measure the level of your students. Now it’s up to you to do the job.
Lastly, ask yourselves: Do you love this job? why do you need to ask that? Because that can affect your job performance. Well, if you don’t like teaching, then quit. If you’re stressed out and burned out, then take a rest. If you are demotivated, then basically, be positive. These are very important key factors that you have to think for you to be able to be successful with your jobs.
That’s it. but before that, before I end this speech, I would like to recommend that please, teachers go beyond your job descriptions.
