The NINOY AQUINO DAY

Every year on the 21st of August celebrates the Ninoy Aquino Day to show respect of his death on the said date.  Mr. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr was an opposition of the Marcos’s at that time, fighting for democracy during martial law.EDSA1

Ninoy Aquino Day was declared as a national special non-working holiday, signed by the former president Arroyo in observance of her holiday economics program in promotion of tourism.  Since then, they hold ceremony for this holiday at the People Power monument where EDSA Revolution took place.

Because of Mr. Aquino opposing the Marcos administration, he was imprisoned for long.  And, because of heart attack on the year 1980, he moved to the US for medical treatment.  The then-Manila international Airport was named Ninoy Aquino International Airport, in honor of him, after he was shot there and got killed on August 21, 1983 while arriving in the Philippines from the plane.

That assassination of Mr. Aquino led to the downfall of the Marcos regime and many protests arise at the funeral.  Together with his wife Cory Aquino, they were both considered as the hero of democracy, as Mrs. Aquino became the president on the year 1986 leading the people Power Revolution after his husband’s death.

This Commemoration of the Assassination of the Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr, official holiday name was created by Republic Act 9256 to recall the significant contribution of the democratic deeds of him and his beliefs of uplifting freedom for the Filipino people, and for the country.
